Communiversity Redux

I had such a good time teaching  at UMKC’s Communiversity last week I decided to do it again! I’ve registered to do two sections this summer; one on a Thursday night and the second on a Saturday morning.  Communiversity still needs to approve and see where this would fit in the schedule, so I will give out the details when I have them.

Do not lie on your resume

1. Honesty
I know. Everybody knows you shouldn’t lie on a rezume. Furthermore, everybody knows everybody else fudges on their rezume. Really?

Obviously He's Lying

My rule is if you could not get an affirmative nod from the employer, school, or person you are making the the claim about then it does not belong on your rezume.

Why take the chance? Who knows who will handle your rezume after you send it in? If all it takes is one phone call to verify a fact then you are cutting your own throat before you even get in the door.  Remember, the gatekeeper is there to disqualify you if you make a single misstep.

Now take that further.  You get away with your lie and get hired.  Most employment agreements have the “if you lied you are gone or in jail” clause. (It’s right after the sanity clause.)  Now, every time you have to go to talk to the supervisor or HR you are dreading the possibility of being found out and exposed as a fraud.

Do you need that gnawing you for the rest of your time there? Is the next promotion the one that gets the thorough background check?

I landed a job with a large company my senior year in college. I was to start upon graduation.  Well I moved out there, started working, and I was getting all comfy. Then I get a letter stating I was one Literature class shy of a degree so I would not be receiving a diploma.

I should have just gone to them and explain. It would have been a binary problem either I could stay or I couldn’t.  I chose to sweep it under the carpet.

That choice colored my three years there.  I had good times, learned great sruf, and accomplished a huge deployment, but I was always waiting for that other shoe to drop.

So I could dig up all kinds of stats stating how often employers check out the statements tendered on a rezume.  But I won’t.  Just know that they do.

Intense Rezumes are honest.  They are crafted to show you in a good light, but they do not lie or shade the truth.

Presentation: Intense Resume

What a wonderful experience! I taught my first class at UMKC’s Communiversity last night and shared the following presentation with the eight who attended.
We were young and old, male and female, first career and nth career, and of various education levels.  But we all know what it is like to have the wrong job , be without a job, and to have the desire to reach our potential in the place uniquely suited to us.
The room was small and there was no projector, so I turned my laptop around and ran the presentation from the side.  My delivery was pure lecture although I had planned to be more interactive.
I sincerely hope I was able to help each of the people attending. Here is the presentation only edited a little bit from what I gave.

What is an Intense Résumé

An intense rezume is a rezume that gets the attention of the person reading and gets you an interview. So what gets a rezume noticed? What makes a hiring professional call one person over a multitude of applicants?

With technology constantly advancing employers are able to get their job posting in front of many more people.  As a result, more qualified applicants are applying for each role. Furthermore, the applicants themselves with access to high-powered technology enables them to create better rezumes faster. What used to be two pages of double-spaced type can now be anything up to an interactive web site, blog, or video. The sky’s the limit.

My purpose in creating this blog is to share what I have learned about creating rezumes and help you get out of the doldrums of a layoff or the side channel of job that is wrong for you and land the role God created you for.
